Host Family Responsibilities

Host families are required to:

  1. Treat the student as a member of the household.
  2. Provide the student with a house key.
  3. Provide three (3) healthy meals per day, including a bag lunch on school days and a light evening snack.
  4. Provide a furnished bedroom, including a bed, lamp, table, and chair.
  5. Provide clean linens and towels on a weekly basis.
  6. Establish reasonable household rules, including curfews, and maintain awareness of the student’s whereabouts, companions, and contact information.
  7. Communicate openly with the student to ensure a supportive and comfortable living environment.
  8. Assist the student in obtaining medical attention when required and notify the Homestay Select+  immediately. Students are solely responsible for all medical expenses and must carry their own medical insurance. Walk-in clinics or family doctors are recommended where appropriate. Emergency hospital care should be accessed when necessary.
  9. Assist the student on the first day of school by explaining transportation routes and public transit usage, including where to purchase bus passes.
  10. Inform the student of nearby banks, local attractions, entertainment venues, and shopping centres.
  11. Meet with the student the day after arrival to provide a welcome orientation and review household rules to avoid misunderstandings.

Host families are interviewed in their homes and must complete an application form.

Provider staff inspect the student’s bedroom, bathroom, and common areas, review host family responsibilities, and obtain signed host family agreements.
